Coupling Photosystem II (PSII) to nano-photocatalysts for energy production:
Photosystem II is one of the most fundamental protein complexes in nature. Itis the source of all of the oxygen that we breath and food that we eat. PSII oxidizes water, initiating the electron transfer process in photosynthesis. Isolation and utilization of PSII as a model system for clean energy production, has long intrigued many scientists. In our work we have designed bio-hybrid systems of PSII coupled to metal nano-photocatalysts that enhance photocurrent production from PSII. Nanocrystals with fine-tuned properties are carefully designed, as well as linkers and electron shuttles, to promote maximal electron transfer efficiency.
